| The Mummy of Matanzas |
|Site||San Carlos Matanzas Cemetery|
Found in one of the underground galleries of San Carlos Matanzas Cemetery, during a cleaning in June 1965.
The mummy of Matanzas was that of a woman of 50-60 years, of Eupoean descent, who died in 1872. Research suggested it was the body of Josefa Petronila Margarita Ponce de León Herederos who was born in Guanabacoa in 1815, and died of a severe respiratory infection. The body was embalmed in the nineteenth century, with a solution of zinc chloride and aluminum sulfate.
Authorities first decided to just leave it where it was found, but a mentally disturbed man desecrated the tomb and he stole the head of the mummy. Due to this act of destruction, the city decided to protect the mummy.
