In 2015, two mummified bodies were found, thought to be two climbers who went missing in 1959. The two were part of a group of seven climbers who disappeared on Pico de Orizaba following an avalanche. The bodies were found close to the 18,406 feet summit. A surviving member of the climbing party claimed the two bodies belong to Enrique Garcia Romero and Juan Espinosa Camargo.
Natuarlly mummified in the freezing conditions at the mountain's peak.
DNA testing will be used to officially identify the bodies.
In 2018, the Escuadron 303 unit of the Mexican army mounted a successful retrieval effort.
