A mummified child, now called the Omasker, was taken by English explorers from Darnley Island of the Torres Strait in 1849 by sailors on HMS Rattlesnake. When the mummy arrived in Liverpool in 1956, a note was attached to it saying its head had gone missing, believed to have been stolen while it was on display.

Now the indigenous people of Erub (Darnley Island) are trying to retrieve from museums across Europe 277 sets of remains, taken during colonial times.

The mummy was a part of the ethnographical collection of the Merseyside County Museum, but was housed in the Norwich Museum before being repatriated in 2010.
