The 4th King of Egypt's 19th Dynasty, his throne name was Ba-en-re Mery-netjeru, which means "The Soul of Re, Beloved of the Gods." At almost 60 years old, Merenptah took the throne after the death of his father, Ramesses II, who had outlived at least 12 other sons. His reign - considered rather short - covered a span of roughly 10 years. Most of the known information on Merenptah's regime refers to his military career as General of the Army - a position realized about 12 years prior to Ramesses II's death. The most illustrious part of Merenptah's rule was the building of a palace after moving Egypt's governmental heart to Memphis.

Mummification[]

Merenptah's tomb is number KV 8 located in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of Luxor (ancient Thebes). The king probably died around 1202 BC, but his mummy was not found within his tomb.

Merenptah

In 1898, his mummy was discovered along with 18 others in the cache discovered in the tomb of Amenhotep II (KV 35).

Additional[]

Merenptah was probably the fourth child of Ramesses II's second principle wife, Istnofret (Isisnofret).
