Irtw-irw (pronounced "ear-too ear-oo") means "may the eye (of the god) be against them." In other words, may the eye of the god protect Irtw-irw from his enemies. For many years the mummy languished in the back room of a Michigan coin dealer. In 1986, it was purchased by The Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology at Memphis State University for about $40,000.
Studies[]
In 1987 a medical team from the University of Tennessee Medical School examined him with C.A.T. scan, and pathologists closely examined him. Later, an E.N.T. (ear, nose and throat) specialist looked inside Irtw-irw's head. This exam, along with the C.A.T. scan, confirmed that Irtw-irw suffered from an ear infection which ultimately spread into his brain and may have caused his death.
The examination also revealed that he was younger than expected, and died at perhaps 30 years old.
He stood about 5 foot 2 inches tall.
