Bui Thi Khang was a Vietnamese Buddhist. In the faith of his religion he abstained from food and water to achieve enlightenment. This lead to his death and mummification.
Bui Thi Khang was mummified through a process known as Sokushinbutsu. This is a Buddhist method of mummification which involves abstaining from things such as food and water. One who uses this method would essentially begin to mummify while still alive.
