At the age of 92 Estela Melendez went to a hospital in Chile after a fall. Doctors discovered a calcified fetus in her womb that had been there for over fifty years. This is a biological process, the mummy was unplanned and unexpected.
The rare condition is called lithopedion and occurs when a developing fetus dies during pregnancy and then mummifies outside the uterus. It becomes calcified and is too big to be reabsorbed by the body. The body calcifies it in order to shield the mothers body from infection. Lithopedion babies seem to mostly occur in ectopic pregnancies.
The fetus weighed around 4.4 pounds.
