The Arden Woman (also known as Bredmose woman) was discovered in the Bredmose bog in the Parish of Store Arden, in Denmark. The mummy was discovered in 1942 but is thought to date back to 1400 BC where she died at the approximate age of 20 to 25 years old.
Biography
Not much is known about her life. She was found with her hair made up. Her dark blond hair was braided into two pigtails and wrapped around her head, overtop of which was a "sprang" cap.
Unlike most bog bodies she was found with no signs of violence on her body.
Mummification
She is but one of a large number of mummies known as "bog bodies," that were uncovered in mostly Northern European countries. These naturally preserved corpses of humans were found in peat bogs and were naturally mummified thanks to low temperatures, a lack of oxygen, and high levels of acidity found in the water. Most of these bodies are preserved quite well with the corpses retaining their skin and internal organs.
